Abstract

The fall of Dhaka and creation of Bangladesh in 1971 was a massive tragedy, disbelief and anguish for the nation. Urdu literature in Pakistan had intensively documented emotions, shock and personal analysis of the catastrophe. Autobiographies due to its creative yet nonfictional expression has wider space to document social and political events. This short article is an effort to identify and discern the views expressed over this political event in Urdu autobiographies written in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the north-western border province of Pakistan. Through content analysis of Thirteen biographies, the results shows that writers presented well informed yet diverse opinions over causes and factors of that national tragedy, with personal and original analysis to identify the individuals and institutions responsible for this tragic episode. These first-hand experiences largely in agreement with analysis of the question found in historic, journalistic and war analysis write-ups.
