Roshanai: A Historical, Political, and Revolutionary Context

Abstract

Sajjad Zaheer was one of the most prominent and pioneering figures of the Progressive Writers’ Movement. He remained steadfast in his commitment to the ideas, ideologies, and aspirations of the movement until the very end of his life. Through this intellectual and literary movement, he not only challenged but also sought to liberate the Indian people from the shackles of conservatism, religious monopolization, feudal structures, social prejudice, and economic exploitation. His role was instrumental in introducing new literary sensibilities that emphasized realism, humanism, and social justice, thereby shaping the course of modern Urdu literature. His remarkable book “Roshanai” (1951), written during his imprisonment in different jails of Pakistan, stands as an authentic historical document of the Progressive Writers’ Movement and its leading literary figures. In this seminal work, Sajjad Zaheer meticulously traces the intellectual, social, and political journey of the movement from its inception in 1935 up to the creation of Pakistan in 1947.
