Abstract

This article presents a detailed introductory analysis of Lexicography and its profound relationship with Lexicology, affirming that a language’s richness is directly proportional to its lexical inventory. The research establishes that a language cannot achieve status as a reliable and standard medium without being underpinned by rigorous lexicographical standards. The study systematically reviews the core principles necessary for compiling a standard dictionary, drawn from the foundational texts of dictionary making. These principles are categorized into four critical areas: Lexical Selection and Corpus: Emphasizing the inclusion of all relevant vocabulary, including archaic and newly coined words, specialized terminology from various fields (legal, political, professional), and socio-cultural expressions like proverbs, idioms, and even vulgar/colloquial terms, with appropriate markers. Grammatical and Morphological Information.
