Comparative Study of Selected Interpretations of “Zauq-o-Shauq”

Abstract

The poetry of Muhammad Iqbal represents a coherent system of thought aimed at the intellectual and spiritual revival of the Muslim community and at directing it toward new possibilities and horizons. In this context, Iqbal experimented with various established poetic genres, while his long poems in particular hold significant importance due to the profound synthesis of thought and artistic expression. The study also seeks to explore how critics and commentators with differing intellectual orientations have interpreted the same literary work from multiple perspectives.In this regard, the interpretations offered by scholars such as Ghulam Rasool Mehr, Yousuf Saleem Chishti, Nishtar Jalandhari, Abu Naeem Abdul Hakim,Abdul Rasheed Fazil, Arif Batalvi, Faiz Muhammad Jalandhari, Asrar Zaidi, Khwaja Muhammad Zakariya, and Khwaja Hamid Yazdani will be analyzed. Their commentaries on the poem Zauq-o-Shauq will be comparatively reviewed in order to understand the diverse interpretive approaches applied to a single poetic text and to highlight the multidimensional nature of Iqbal’s thought.
