History, Historicity, and New Historicism: Interrelationships and Theoretical Debates
Keywords:
History, Historicism, New Historicism, Power, Discourse, Culture, Context, Urdu LiteratureAbstract
This article examines the interconnected concepts of history, historicism, and New Historicism, highlighting their role in shaping human consciousness and literary understanding. It argues that human beings interpret the present and envision the future through engagement with the past, which becomes systematized in these three intellectual frameworks. History is presented as the structured record of past events and experiences, while historicism provides a methodological lens to interpret these events within their specific temporal, cultural, and social contexts. Moving beyond both, New Historicism critically interrogates the relationship between history, literature, power, culture, and discourse, emphasizing that both historical and literary texts are constructed narratives influenced by ideological and institutional forces anThe study further explores how literature cannot be separated from its socio-political and cultural milieu, and how meaning emerges through the interaction of text and context.
