A Critical and Analytical Study of Dr. Irshad Shakir Awan’s Art of Qiṭ‘a Writing

Abstract

Dr. Irshad Shakir Awan’s poetry is an exemplary illustration of giving a new intellectual and meaningful dimension to the tradition of qit’ah (epigrammatic) poetry in Urdu literature. Although his qit’ahs are brief, they constitute complete intellectual units, encapsulating life, ethics, religious consciousness, social issues, and existential experiences within just a few lines. His work is not merely an expression of emotion but represents a serious and dignified intellectual endeavor. The religious elements in his qit’ahs, such as hamd, na‘at, and manqabat, are not mere formal expressions of devotion but carry a thoughtful and ethical perspective, closely linked to moral character development, inner purification, and social responsibility. Similarly, themes like grief, deprivation, migration, and internal conflict serve as a medium to explore human consciousness and moral awareness. Social consciousness is also prominent in his poetry; he presents societal injustices, ethical decline, and human weaknesses with seriousness and balance.
