Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive psychoanalytic evaluation of Wali Khan, the protagonist of Akhtar Raza Saleemi's critically acclaimed Urdu novel Jandar (2017), utilizing the foundational frameworks established by Sigmund Freud. Set against the backdrop of a fading rural civilization, Jandar serves as both a cultural elegy and a deep psychological exploration of human alienation. This research examines how Wali Khan's behavioral anomalies, profound solitude, acute consciousness of mortality, and deep-seated emotional fixation on a traditional watermill (jandar) stem from unresolved childhood traumas and subconscious defense mechanisms. By applying Freud's structural model of the psyche—comprising the Id, Ego, and Superego this paper demonstrates how the watermill transcends its material form to become a psychological extension of Wali's unconscious mind.
