Urdu Literature and Foresight: The Creative Mind as a Mirror of the Future

This article examines the relationship between Urdu literature and the concept of foresight, focusing on the creative mind as a reflector of possible futures. Foresight is understood not as certain prediction or supernatural knowledge, but as an intellectual and creative process through which future possibilities are perceived on the basis of historical experience, contemporary circumstances, social trends, political developments, human psychology, and imaginative insight. The study argues that literature does not merely record the past or represent the present; it can also identify emerging changes, warn of potential crises, and imagine alternative social and cultural futures. Urdu poetry, fiction, and novels provide significant examples of this literary future-consciousness. The works and ideas of major literary figures, including Mir Taqi Mir, Mirza Ghalib, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, N. M. Rashed, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Manto, Ghulam Abbas, Ismat Chughtai, Khadija Mastur, Qurrat-ul-Ain Haider, Abdullah Hussain, Intizar Hussain, Bano Qudsia, and Ibn-e-Safi, demonstrate different forms of creative foresight.
