Tawhid as the Central Axis of Iqbal’s Thought: A Research Study of Its Qur’anic Foundations, Philosophical Interpretations and Intellectual Formation

Abstract

This study explores Allama Iqbal’s concept of Tawhid with particular reference to its Qur’anic, philosophical and intellectual dimensions. Tawhid, as the central doctrine of Islam, is not merely a theological assertion in Iqbal’s thought but a dynamic and transformative principle that shapes both individual consciousness and collective life. The research highlights how Iqbal reinterprets Tawhid in the light of the Qur’an, presenting it as a living force that integrates faith, reason and action. From a Qur’anic perspective, Iqbal derives the essence of Tawhid as the Unity of God, which implies the unity of creation and the coherence of the universe. Philosophically, he presents Tawhid as a foundation for understanding reality as a unified whole governed by a single, absolute Being. This unity eliminates dualism and fragmentation, offering a coherent worldview that aligns metaphysical truth with human experience. Intellectually, Iqbal emphasizes that Tawhid fosters self-awareness (khudi), moral responsibility and creative freedom, enabling human beings to realize their potential as vicegerents of God on earth.
