Abstract

This article explores the quest for the ideal in Jaun Elia’s poetry, examining how his longing for love, intellectual certainty, and meaningful existence encounters disillusionment and doubt. Through close textual reading, the study considers the ideal as an imagined possibility against which the poet evaluates both personal experience and social reality. It focuses on the tensions between desire and fulfilment, self and other, and belonging and estrangement. Particular attention is paid to irony, paradox, negation, and self-questioning as poetic expressions of these tensions. The article argues that Jaun’s rejection of received certainties does not necessarily signify the abandonment of aspiration; rather, his scepticism often reveals a persistent attachment to possibilities that remain unrealised. The beloved, the self, and the social world consequently emerge as interconnected sites of longing and critique. Read in this light, Jaun’s poetry presents the search for the ideal as an unresolved struggle that sustains both emotional intensity and intellectual inquiry.
