Abstract

This research paper is an attempt to critically examine Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi’s short story as a profound reflection of the civilizational tragedy caused by the partition of the Indian subcontinent. The study explores how the story transcends political boundaries to portray the emotional, cultural and psychological disintegration experienced by individuals and communities divided by history. Through the symbolic motif of the letter, Qasmi reconstructs a shared cultural memory that survives despite geographical separation and ideological conflict. The paper investigates the themes of Nostalgia, Displacement, fractured identity, and the enduring bonds of a common Indo-Muslim cultural heritage. It further analyzes Qasmi’s artistic techniques which effectively communicate the pain of separation and the resilience of human relationships. Ultimately, the study establishes that the story remains a timeless literary testimony to the human cost of political divisions and underscores the importance of cultural continuity, mutual understanding, and shared historical consciousness in contemporary discourse.
