The inclusion of Archetypes in Urdu Short Stories
Keywords:
Archetypes, Urdu Short Fiction, Carl Gustav Jung, Northrop Frye, Joseph Campbell, Cultural Memory, Partition, Symbolism, Urdu LiteratureAbstract
This article explores the use of archetypes in Urdu short fiction through the theories of Carl Gustav Jung, Northrop Frye, and Joseph Campbell. It argues that archetypal patterns in Urdu literature are rooted not only in Western literary theory but also in indigenous religious, folkloric, Sufi, and dastan traditions. The study examines recurring archetypes such as the mother, child, shadow, wise old man, sacrifice, journey, exile, and transformation in the works of Premchand, Saadat Hasan Manto, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Ismat Chughtai, Intizar Husain, Qurratulain Hyder, and other major Urdu fiction writers. It particularly highlights the impact of the 1947 Partition, which transformed traditional archetypes into representations of displacement, violence, fractured identity, and moral crisis. The article concludes that archetypes in Urdu fiction function as dynamic forms of cultural memory and social critique, gaining significance when traditional symbolic patterns interact with the complexity of individual human experience.
