An Analytical Study of the Role and Potential of the Individual in the Poetry of Ghalib and Iqbal

Abstract

The poetry of Mirza Asadullah Ghalib and Allama Muhammad Iqbal presents two distinctive yet interconnected perspectives on the individual, his existence, identity, struggle, and potential. Ghalib portrays the individual as a questioning, introspective, self-conscious, and often solitary being who confronts the uncertainties of existence and challenges conventional restraints. Iqbal, through the philosophy of Khudi (selfhood), transforms the individual into an active, purposeful, and creative force capable of shaping his destiny through self-awareness, action, courage, and moral strength. While Ghalib emphasizes existential questioning, imagination, individuality, and freedom, Iqbal stresses self-realization, continuous struggle, collective responsibility, and creative action. The comparative analysis reveals that both poets affirm the significance of individual consciousness, yet Ghalib’s individual primarily seeks to understand existence, whereas Iqbal’s individual strives to transform it.
