Abstract

Some Literacy Figures are remembered not for a single genre but for work spread across several fields, held together by a consistent scholarly temperament. Dr. Ali Muhammad Khan is such a figure: teacher, researcher, critic, editor, writer of sketches and biographies, translator, curriculam designer and autogbiographer. This articles surverys these dimensions to access his personality, style, intenllectual distinctions and place in Urdu literature. His doctoral research, published as Lahore Ka Dabistan-e-Shairi, agrues that Anjuman-e-Punjab and Lahore formed a distinct school of urdu poetry while Ashnaf-e-Nazm-o-Nasr introduces genres not treated in detail elsewhere. As an editor, he has prepared collected works (Kulliyat) of classical and modern poets, including Jauhar and Hasrat Mohani, with close attention to orthography, Punctuation, annotation and glossaries.
