The Artistic Forms and Styles of Expression in Satire and Humor

Abstract

The artistic expression of satire and humor encompasses diverse styles and forms that hold fundamental importance. These include pleasantry, comedy, paradox, wit, humorous situation, humorous character, fantasy, parody, burlesque, black comedy, subtle humor, double entendre, ludicrous humor, irony, dramatic irony, reproach and pictorial satire. An examination of their meanings, artistic characteristics, and modes of expression illuminates the structure and literary significance of satire and humor. The development of these forms in Eastern and Western literary traditions has transformed satire and humor from mere entertainment into an effective means of expressing human behavior, social inequalities, and cultural values.
