Abstract

This research article explores the theoretical, historical, and intellectual dimensions of colonialism and post colonialism, with a particular focus on the South Asian   especially Indian context. The first section of the article discusses the key debates of colonialism, highlighting the mechanisms of power, cultural dominance, knowledge control, and the systematic suppression of native identities and traditions. It examines how colonial powers imposed their authority not only politically and economically, but also intellectually and culturally. The article then delves into the establishment and expansion of the colonial system in India, illustrating how British imperialism penetrated Indian society. It explores how colonial rule disrupted indigenous structures, reshaped education, introduced a new linguistic hierarchy, and sought to redefine local culture and heritage through a Eurocentric lens. This section demonstrates how the colonial regime attempted to mentally and ideologically subjugate the Indian population. In the second half, the article transitions into a comprehensive study of post colonialism, discussing its definition, scope, and fundamental premises. Postcolonial theory is presented not merely as a literary or academic trend, but as a powerful intellectual resistance against the lingering impacts of imperialism.
