Abstract

Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi’s short stories reveal the political tensions and social ruptures that shaped early Pakistan, portraying marginalized individuals whose suffering exposes the failures of newly formed power structures. Through narratives centered on refugees, laborers, peasants, and displaced families, Qasmi illustrates how independence did not erase exploitation; rather, old hierarchies re-emerged under new names. His characters navigate hunger, dislocation, feudal oppression, and bureaucratic indifference, showing how political ideals are often shattered by social inequalities. The peasants’ struggle for water, land, and dignity becomes a metaphor for a nation still captive to entrenched privilege. By blending emotional depth with sharp socio-political insight, Qasmi exposes the invisible mechanisms of power that shape everyday life. His fiction not only documents historical realities but also critiques them, urging a collective moral awakening. Ultimately, Qasmi transforms the short story into a site of ethical reflection, where the pain of the oppressed becomes a powerful indictment of social injustice and a reminder that genuine nationhood is impossible without human dignity and equality.
