Abstract

This study explores the representation of political issues in the short stories of Hameed Shahid, a prominent contemporary Urdu fiction writer whose works encapsulate the social and ideological tensions of postcolonial Pakistan. Shahid’s narratives reveal how political instability, foreign interventions, religious extremism, and power struggles influence individual and collective consciousness. His fiction does not merely document events; rather, it exposes the psychological pressures and moral fractures that emerge when state institutions weaken and public trust collapses. Through symbolic expression and nuanced characterization, Shahid interrogates the consequences of authoritarian regimes, war on terror policies, and shifting global power structures, particularly those unfolding after the events of 9/11. His stories demonstrate how political manipulation transforms ordinary citizens into victims of fear, uncertainty, and ideological exploitation.
