Abstract

This article undertakes a nuanced exploration of Ernest Hemingway’s “Iceberg Theory” arguably the most defining principle of his artistic vision-as it manifests across five of his major novels The “Iceberg theory’ functions as the very soul of Hemingway’s novels. Rather than articulating emotions directly, Hemingway’s Foremost artistry lies in rendering them through an economy of words, enriched with symbols, images, metaphors and subtle suggestions. Just as the greater mass of an iceberg lies hidden beneath the Sea’s surface, so too does the deeper substance of the novel remain concealed beneath the visible text. Hemingway entrusts the reader with the taste of discovering meaning through the depths of their own understanding. This article offers a detailed examination of novels including The Old Man and the Sea, a farewell to Arms, The Sun also Rises, for whom the Bell Tools, and to Have and Have not. So that it may be discerned how the writer employs this technique to intensify expression and heighten narrative tension.
