Muslim Identity: In the Thought of Iqbal and Akbar Allahabadi

Abstract

This research article investigates the concept of Muslim identity as reflected in the intellectual and poetic thought of Allama Muhammad Iqbal and Akbar Allahabadi, two major literary voices of the Indian subcontinent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The study begins with a theoretical clarification of the term identity, examining its philosophical, cultural, and social dimensions. It then defines Muslim identity as a multidimensional construct shaped by religious belief, moral values, historical awareness, and collective consciousness. In Iqbal’s poetry, Muslim identity is presented as a dynamic and regenerative force grounded in Iman (faith), Khudi (selfhood), intellectual freedom, and purposeful action. Iqbal emphasizes self-realization, spiritual autonomy, and active engagement with the challenges of modernity as essential components of a vibrant Muslim identity. His vision calls for the revival of Islamic thought and the reconstruction of Muslim society through moral strength and creative vitality. Akbar Allahabadi, on the other hand, articulates Muslim identity through satire and social criticism.
