Abstract

The society depicted in Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi's stories has a distinctly progressive background. In this society, the self-respect of the poor people has been continuously undermined by the rich and feudal class. Majority of characters in these stories does not have a respectable position in the society. The real names of these poor people are distorted and they are addressed in a contemptuous manner. In this research paper, in the light of Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi's short stories, the social and economic reasons that lead to the undermining of the self-esteem of the poor sections of the society have been discussed in detail. Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi has portrayed life in his short stories with such realism that the human beings depicted in them are not lifeless; rather, they breathe and exist vividly. They either perceive their personal dignity themselves or the storyteller presents their wounded dignity in such a way that readers are compelled to reflect upon it. This, in turn, makes them intensely aware of the inequalities present in society.
